Motivation. How to get motivated! What is? Motivators

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination.
Tommy Lasorda

Motivation is the driving force which help us to achieve our goals and it can have intrinsic and external drives.

Intrinsic motivation is when we get motivated by the task itself, it exist in us with out relying on any external pressure

The 16 basic desires that guide human intrinsic motivation:

  • Eating, the need for food
  • Romance, the need for sex
  • Tranquility, the need to be safe
  • Acceptance, the need for approval
  • Family, the need to raise children
  • Independence, the need for individuality
  • Power, the need for influence of will
  • Curiosity, the need to learn
  • Order, the need for organized, stable, predictable environments
  • Status, the need for social standing/importance
  • Honor, the need to be loyal to the traditional values of one's clan/ethnic group
  • Idealism, the need for social justice
  • Physical activity, the need for exercise
  • Social contact, the need for friends (peer relationships)
  • Saving, the need to collect
  • Vengeance, the need to strike back/to win

External Motivation come from outside us like: money and grades, coercion and threat of punishment.

Self-determination theory proposes that extrinsic motivation can be internalised by the individual if the task fits with their values and beliefs and therefore helps to fulfill their basic psychological needs.

Our wants and desires influence our comportament.

Only unsatisfied needs influence behavior, satisfied needs do not.

The needs can be arranged in the order of importance.

We only advance to the next level only when the lower need is at least minimally satisfied.

The needs:

  • Physiology (hunger, thirst, sleep, etc.)
  • Safety/Security/Shelter/Health
  • Belongingness/Love/Friendship
  • Self-esteem/Recognition/Achievement
  • Self actualization

So how do we get motivated? How you can motivate yourself?

Simple: by keeping the needs unmet. The lower level they are, the biggest increase in motivation we have. We need to link the action required for our goal and the accomplish ot it with the satisfaction of a (basic) need.

Other ways to keep you motivated are:

  • make a public commitment in doing something (or say what you going to do to somebody who will tell everybody your plan)
  • get someone to check your progress every day
  • have a step by step plan with easy, fast steps
  • give yourself a daily rating or a weekly rating on a scale of 1-10 on your effort and progress.
